Pop/Review Fabúla - With His Eyes Closed

Fabúla (Margrét Kristín Sigurðardóttir) is a storyteller, using music, lyrics, movements, acting, and visual arts as parts of her expression. She received her education in dramatic arts, composing, and jazz piano in Reykjavík, Trondheim, and London, and her career as a singer/composer took off as she released her first solo album, “Cut My Strings,” in 1996. That album was nominated for the Icelandic Music Awards, and her second album, “Kossafar á ilinni” was also nominated as the album of the year 2002.

"With His Eyes Closed" by Fabúla explores the common conflict between comfort and adventure in a gripping story performed to music. While avoiding shocks and navigating a world of self-imposed boundaries, the protagonist of the song secretly longs for an exciting and spontaneous existence. Seeking stability yet wanting to embrace the unexpected is a frequent psychological tension that is reflected in this emotional subject.

The song, which was recorded in the quaint port town of Hafnarfjörður, which is close to Reykjavík, exudes closeness and genuineness. Co-produced by Fabúla and guitarist Birkir Rafn Gíslason, the song creates a soundscape that reflects the emotional depth of its message by fusing rich, immersive instrumentation with powerful lyrics. The contemplative tone of the tune is enhanced by the richness and subtlety added by Gíslason's guitar work.

The visually striking music video for the song tells a tale that goes beyond the music. The video was created following a fortuitous encounter with the French band "La tit fanfare" in southern France and was directed by Embla Wigum, Fabúla's daughter. Wigum's artistic vision combines French and Icelandic cultural elements to create a breathtaking visual tale that encapsulates the song's themes with new and colorful energy.

"With His Eyes Closed" is a brilliant fusion of reflection, creativity, and teamwork. It highlights Fabúla's ability to create relevant tales and enhance them with vibrant musical and visual components. The end product is a masterfully written and thought-provoking piece that challenges listeners to consider their own goals and the bravery to go for them.
