Worldwide/Review Marvash, Siavash Kamkar, DrummerMartijn - Az Zagros Ta Zuiderzee
Marvash is an international world/jazz fusion group, led by santur player Siavash Kamkar (Teheran, IR) & drummer Martijn Soeterbroek/DrummerMartijn (Utrecht, NL).
The Iranian/Dutch band Marvash's second EP, “Az Zagros Ta Zuiderzee,” is a fascinating blend of cultures. This 12-minute tune, which is divided into six separate segments, transports listeners to the depths of the historic Zuiderzee in the Netherlands and the breathtaking heights of the Zagros Mountains in Iran. The EP weaves the stark differences between Dutch and Persian music and culture into a single, inventive musical story while also acting as a metaphor for them.
“Az Zagros Ta Zuiderzee” is a superb example of Marvash's skill in combining disparate cultures. The EP moves fluidly between the captivating drum solos of DrummerMartijn and heartfelt santur melodies, which are fueled by Siavash Kamkar's expressive touch. Dynamic transitions from free-form improvisations to enticingly rhythmic rhythms support these components, demonstrating the group's adaptability and synergistic collaboration.
This EP is especially noteworthy for its ability to merge harmoniously while embracing opposites. Experimental improvisations, current Dutch sensibilities, and Persian classical influences blend to create a soundscape that is both traditional and surprisingly contemporary.
Here, Marvash demonstrates his skill at using music as a narrative tool. “Az Zagros Ta Zuiderzee” explores identity, connection, and togetherness in variety in addition to being an aural experience. This EP daringly pushes boundaries and provides a creative and profoundly meaningful model for cross-cultural cooperation. Anyone interested in the transformational power of music should listen to it.
