Rock/Review Koalra - The Clouds Still Hang On You

Fusing the fuzz-fueled guitars and loose rhythms of acts like Dinosaur Jr. To the experimental soundscapes of artists such as Sonic Youth and The Cure, Koalra is an emerging indie rock band who recently moved to Portland from their native Chicago. The 90's-influenced four-piece released their self-titled album in December of 2019. The eight-track debut is a noise-fest of uplifting yet thrashing guitar tracks full of grungy melodies.

The second single by Koalra entitled “The Clouds Still Hang On You” precedes the forthcoming album “Disasterclass” due out on december 22nd. With this new release, it gives a sneak preview of the sound and subject matter from where Koalra will venture. “The Clouds Still Hang On You” is an illustration of the bands evolving musical identity and it marks the next step in coming out with another album.

The single sets up an environment of thoughtful introspection from its very first notes, luring the listener into an audacious yet airy imaginary world. Koalra’s sonic palette of dreamy guitar tones and emotive vocals crafts an engaging sonic landscape in sync with the pictorial connotations.

“The Clouds Still Hang On You” carries an emotive discourse enveloped within an emotional journey. It also tells us that there is still a feeling of a sadness or something left unsaid and the song reflects on this sensation. The ability of the band to express depth and richness in their lyrics makes it easy for the listener to feel like they are touching their emotional core.

In anticipation for the new album, the single marks the development of Koalra’s auditory skills. Their sound still has the dreamy nature and immersion, but they have definitely matured. It seems that this band is taking risks and moving to uncharted sonic areas that make one wonder what this “Disasterclass” will sound like.

In conclusion, Koalra's “The Clouds Still Hang On You” is a promising glimpse into the forthcoming “Disasterclass” album. The band continues to craft a sonic identity that marries dreamy atmospheres with emotional depth. As the second single, it sparks curiosity and heightens anticipation for what Koalra has in store with their upcoming release. If this track is any indication, “Disasterclass” may well be a noteworthy chapter in Koalra's musical journey.
